Retail Renegades: People-First Leadership

Ask for help at work - more than you do right now

Navigating & Thriving in Retail Leadership

Walking into the store to close, I could tell something was off. The staff was busy, but the opening manager appeared to be in a panic. However, she was the only one scrambling.

After I put my stuff away, I began checking in with everyone.

The visual manager said he noticed she was stressed but couldn't figure out why. So, I headed over to check in with her.

The day had closed quickly on her: an email from the DM, shoes not put away, and trying to help with the shipment. She was overwhelmed.

She was trying to do everything, so nothing was getting done very well.

Welcome to Retail Renegades,

In every issue, I tear into 1 of the 10 biggest problems all retail leaders face:

  • Delegation
  • Priority order
  • Speaking up
  • Building culture
  • Self-confidence
  • Time management
  • Actionable empathy
  • Steamlining processes
  • Dealing with an overbearing boss
  • Clear & consistent communication

Streamlining Process

Ask for help

"Partner with the visual manager, always." I told her. "Let him in and let him help you."

"I didn't want to bother him. I thought I could do it all." She said.

This is where we get into trouble, friends - trying to do it all.
You can't, so stop it right now.

Share the workload with your teammates. Let them know what you're juggling and ask them where they may be able to help. Then, game plan.

Break it up into bite-size pieces throughout the day.

Retail is tough enough. Don't try to navigate it alone.

When you ask for help, everyone on the team succeeds.

Mailbox

DM of the week.

A message from another retail leader.

"The culture is nothing but horrible. During training our trainer made it sound “cool” to skip your lunch breaks and work a full 9 hours shift."

Yeah, no.

If you work somewhere like this, start applying elsewhere. Don't put up with it. Go to work, do your job well, take ALL your state mandated breaks (look it up if you don't know it), and go home.

A company pays you to do a job - that's it.

Don't let them take away your free time.

Level-Up

One thing you can do today to be a better leader.

Ask for help.

You know I was going to say that.

Let people in. Talk about your workload. People want to help you, so let them. It will take stress off of you and make your team stronger.

Navigating & Thriving in Retail Leadership Oops, there I go. I did it. I'm a crispy little French fry. I am Headed Toward Burnt Out. This week, I entered a rabbit hole we'll call rue21. I didn't know what world I was about to tumble into, but once I was there, I had to write my way out. Rue21 filed for bankruptcy and is closing all its stores. The real story here is how certain executives ran the company. The corporate culture was toxic hustle-bro mixed with vengeance mixed with incompetence....

Navigating & Thriving in Retail Leadership I'm sitting at my dining room table on a Saturday morning, overhauling my business - again. It's overcast and cool. The dog is asleep after his walk, and the coffee is almost gone. Sigh. Solo entrepreneurship is so thrilling, but it is also exhausting and lonely. I currently write three newsletters. Retail Renegades is one of them. The point is to help you navigate the retail industry and thrive while treating people exceptionally well. With all this...
